Most men buy their first chain by eye and their second by experience. The first one gets chosen because it looked good in a photo; the second gets chosen because the first one kinked, or sat wrong under a collar, or turned out to be far heavier than the wrist-level swagger it promised. The differences are real and mostly structural. Every chain is the same idea — small metal components joined into a flexible line — but how those components are made and linked decides everything that follows: how it catches light, how it drapes, how much abuse it takes, whether it suits a pendant, and whether it belongs at a wedding or under a hoodie. Men’s Chain Types Explained

Cuban chain

The one most people picture when they say “chain”. A Cuban link is a curb link that’s been made heavier and twisted flat, so each oval interlocks tightly against the next and the whole thing lies in one solid, continuous plane against the skin.

That flat face is why it reads as substantial even in modest widths — there’s more surface catching the light than in almost any other style. It’s also genuinely tough: thick links, tight interlock, very little to snag. A Cuban is the most confident chain you can wear, and it’s the one that carries a look on its own, without a pendant.

Wear it for: everyday statement wear, streetwear, open-collar evenings. Skip it for: anything that needs to disappear under a formal shirt.

Curb chain

The Cuban’s older, more versatile relative. Curb links are twisted so they lie flat too, but they’re typically lighter and slightly more open, which gives the chain more movement and a softer, more classical look.

The curb is the safest recommendation in men’s jewellery. It suits nearly every neck, works alone or with a pendant, and slides comfortably under a shirt. If someone asks for one chain to own, it’s usually this — in 5mm for presence, narrower if it’s carrying a pendant.

Wear it for: anything. Genuinely — office to weekend. Skip it for: nothing much, which is rather the point.

Belcher chain (rolo)

A British staple, and instantly identifiable: uniform round or oval links, each set at an angle to its neighbour, forming an open, rounded line. Where Cuban and curb chains lie flat, a belcher chain stays three-dimensional — it rolls slightly as you move, which is where the alternative name, rolo, comes from.

Belchers are the traditionalist’s choice: less flash, more heritage, and a favourite for carrying medallions and saint pendants because the round links sit naturally on either side of a bail. A 4mm belcher is understated; a 6mm has real weight without the boldness of Cuban links.

Wear it for: everyday wear, pendant-carrying, a classic British look. Skip it for: when you want maximum shine — the round links catch less light than flat ones.

Franco chain

The engineer’s chain. A Franco is built from V-shaped links that slot into one another in a continuous four-sided column — dense, smooth-sided, and remarkably resistant to kinking or twisting, because the structure barely allows movement out of line.

That density is the selling point. Franco chains feel more solid than their width suggests, they hang dead straight, and they’re the style least likely to tangle in a drawer or catch on a jumper. If you wear a chain daily and want to stop thinking about it, this is the one.

Wear it for: daily wear, pendants (it hangs beautifully straight), anyone hard on their jewellery. Skip it for: if you want obvious, chunky link definition — the Franco’s beauty is its smoothness.

Herringbone chain

The showpiece. Herringbone links are flat, short and angled, laid so tightly that the chain becomes a continuous ribbon of metal — a mirror surface that reflects light in one clean sweep rather than in scattered points.

Nothing else looks like it. It’s sleek, retro, and unmistakably deliberate: a herringbone worn open-collar under evening light is one of the most striking things in men’s jewellery. It also asks for a little care in return — the flat construction that gives it that liquid drape means it prefers to be worn and stored flat rather than bunched, folded or slept in. Treat it as an occasion piece and it stays immaculate for years.

Wear it for: evenings, events, anywhere you want to be noticed. Skip it for: the gym, manual work, or wearing under a heavy knit.

Wheat chain

Named for what it resembles: four strands of twisted oval links woven together into a braided, textured rope. It’s the most detailed chain here — up close it rewards attention, and it holds its shape well thanks to the interlocked construction.

Wheat chains are refined rather than loud. A 3mm wheat carries a pendant elegantly and looks considered on its own, which makes it a strong choice for men who want texture without volume.

Box chain

The minimalist’s answer: square links joined end to end, forming a clean geometric line. Simple, strong for its width, and remarkably discreet.

A 2mm box chain is the piece you wear when you want a chain to be a foundation rather than a focus — perfect under a shirt, ideal for a pendant that should do the talking, and comfortable enough to forget about entirely.

Wear it for: pendants, formal wear, layering, subtlety. Skip it for: statement-only wear — this one’s a supporting act, deliberately.

How to choose: three quick rules

Match the width to the job. As a rough guide: 2–3mm reads as understated and suits pendants and formal shirts; 4–5mm is the everyday sweet spot, visible but not loud; 6mm and above is statement territory, best worn alone. If you’re pairing a chain with a pendant, the chain should support it, not compete — go narrower than you think.

Match the length to the neckline. 20 inches sits at the collarbone and works with an open collar; 22 inches falls to mid-chest, the usual choice for a pendant worn over a t-shirt; 24 inches and beyond sits lower and reads more statement. If you’re buying blind, 22 inches is the safest men’s default.

Match the metal to what you already wear. Consistency does more for a look than any single piece.
